Data is critical in helping make decisions. From February 2021 to April 2021, the Urban research team conducted 24 interviews, 4 focus groups, and solicited 103 responses to an online survey from a range of AAPI organizations. Those organizations represent a broad range of sectors including civil rights, racial justice, business, academia, media, government, and religion. Some initial insights include a lack of sustainable funding, a lack of systematic research and disaggregated data, the marginalization of Pacific Islanders, and the need to develop talent and leadership pipelines across sectors.
“It's really hard to paint a story of why people should invest in our communities because people will just think, model minority, you don't have any needs. The data is not even disaggregated. So without that investment in data and more advocacy and power building, I don't think we'll ever be able to really tell our story and advocate for our own needs.” -AAPI philanthropic leader
Urban’s analysis informs TAAF’s understanding of philanthropic needs and opportunities and helps ensure that investments are tailored and responsive to the community’s priorities.
TAAF wants to support and promote investment in the ecosystem of AAPI organizations and leaders. The foundation aims to create greater opportunity and prosperity for marginalized AAPI communities and ensure that AAPIs are full participants in racial equity conversations and initiatives.
